Jobs That Last Even in Tough Economic Times

We are told that our country is not in a recession, but it certainly appears that way and feels that way to many Americans.  All the signs point in that direction which means that the economy and the job market are chaotic.  Even though there is no career that is absolutely secure in these disorderly times, it is important to take measures to ride out the storm until the economy is more stable.  There are, however, some jobs that handle the fluctuations of the economy much better than others.  Instead of finding yourself headed to the unemployment line, consider finding a career that is more secure and can withstand the turbulent times of a troubled economy.

How to Get Your Dream Job in a Slow Economy

Does the slow economy leave you worried about finding a new job? Don’t despair! Even in a slow economy there are plenty of good jobs available, and with the right preparation you will make yourself stand out from your competition. Below are 7 tips that will get you closer to your dream job.
1. Research
Research the industries that interest you. Find all the companies in your geographic location that currently have positions that you think you would qualify for. This doesn’t only mean open positions. The initial goal is to fill the “funnel” with as many companies that you could see yourself working for. Don’t be too picky. The more companies the better.
Organize those companies in a way that will make it easy for you to keep a good overview. An excel spreadsheet will do just fine. Find each companies’ contact information and simply call them up. Your goal is to find out who is in charge of hiring for the department that you are interested in. Finding out this information might take a few phone calls, but keep in mind that the harder it is, the more likely your competition won’t do this.
2. Making Contact
Once you completed your spreadsheet with the information you need, including the hiring manger’s phone number and e-mail address, it is time to start prospecting. The best way to do this is by working all communication channels. Send in a your resume by mail with a targeted cover letter. Then follow up with a phone call to ensure that the resume was received. The goal is to start the conversation with the hiring manager. Be polite and don’t be too pushy. Simply sell yourself!
3. It’s a numbers game.
The more times you do the steps above the better. It is simply a numbers game. Take your time to customize each cover letter and send in plenty of resumes. The more the better!
4. Ask for action
Be proactive in your job search. Follow up with your targeted companies and learn more about their possible hiring time frame. Once you know their sense of urgency, there is nothing wrong with asking for action. If you know that company XYZ is planning on filling your position within the next 4 weeks, then it is quite acceptable to ask for an interview falling in this time frame. Once again, don’t be too pushy. The following might be a good example how to ask for your face to face interview: “Mr. or Mrs. (hiring manager name here) from your previous e-mail you mentioned that you are planning on filling the (position’s title) position by the end of this month. Is this time frame still accurate” If the answer is yes, then simply ask for your interview by saying something like this: “Well, that is great. I have been narrowing down my job search, and I am most excited about your company. I would really enjoy the opportunity to learn more about your business. Do you think you might be available next week for a brief meeting?” Simply give this a try and you will be surprised about how well it is perceived. If you owned a business, wouldn’t you want employees that are passionate about your business and take initiative to get the job done?
5. Dress Right For Your Job Interview:
As a general rule, it is better to overdress than showing up too casual. Keep your attire on the professional, and slightly conservative side. Unless you are applying for a job that is related to the fashion industry keep your outfit to a classy 2-piece, charcoal gray business suit, plain white dress shirt, and classic business tie. The best necktie colors for this purpose are dark blue and burgundy red. Stay away from too trendy neckties such as pink, orange, and lime green. Although they are quite fashionable, they might be perceived as too flashy.
6. Body Language:
First impressions are usually made within the first 3 seconds of meeting someone. That’s why the right attire and body language is so crucial for your job interview. If you start the interview on a good note, you will have won half the battle.
Have a good handshake, make good eye contact, and smile when appropriate. Be confident but not arrogant!
7. The right Follow Up
Few people take the effort to write a Thank-You note these days. If you really want to stand out from the competition write a handwritten note to the manger you interviewed with. If you prefer to write e-mail, then address the e-mail to the person you interviewed with and copy all other decision makers onto this same e-mail. Thank him/her for taking some time out of his/her busy schedule to meet with you. It will guaranteed leave a good impression, and it will increase your chances to get called back for a second or final interview.
If you follow the tips above you are on the right track to get your dream job. The key is to practice this process. Don’t beat yourself up over rejections, but keep a positive attitude: Every NO will get you closer to the YES.

The Purpose Of Your Resume Is To Get You Into The Job Interview

Are you hunting for a new or replacement job? First thing you will need to have or update your resume.
Many people are confused about the purpose of their resume. The resume does not get you a job. It gets you in the door to the interview. There most likely will be a number of other candidates for that new job that you want. Your competitors so to say.
The purpose of your resume is to advance you up the queue of the group so that you are in a primary position for that interview slot – and not some one else. Simple as that. If there were no other competitors for the job – say in the case of a major tropical storm or hurricane or if is a terrible job – say cleaning Lake Winnipeg blue green algae pond – you may very well be in the position of being the only one to walk in the door or apply.
Being you is the only candidate – you should be able to get the interview. Then you can present yourself properly as a suitable job candidate.
Simply put – any good job that you will want has competitors as well as you applying. You need a well done resume that appears professional in appearance.
There are several options. Hand done. Computer generated. Professional service. Remember as well that your resume can and will change over time. Firstly your resume needs to be tailored specifically for the job you are applying for. The resume you would submit for a senior car finance agent would be different and tailored in presentation than the same person applying for that job as a Lake Manitoba algae cleanup gardener. Same person, same work experience but different emphasis on the specific experience required for the job and specified in the job description and your research of the job, the firm and its preferences.
As well as you gain experience and additional skills over time your resume will need to be updated on a regular basis as well. It has been stated that 99 % of life is preparation. By having an up to date resume at a given time, you are prepared if that dream job just happens to fall in your path. Even if the resume needs to be custom tailored to a specific job or field, you already have in your hands a basic, up to date résumé which can be promptly modified. By having the raw material for this resume you are at least ½ of the way up the river of preparation for that interview.
In terms of the actual writing of your resume you have a number of choices. Remember in life both first impressions and presentation often carries most of the weight.
The resume can be completed on paper by you. Next there are a number of computer software programs that will guide you throw the resume construction process and leave you with a finished product. These resume software programs are basically an advance fill in the blanks. The program will then generate a good all around, basic, acceptable resume.
Remember that in most cases – the good jobs that offer better pay and working conditions and are the start of a career. Or at least a step up for you will have no shortage of competitors. Your competitors will most likely be using the same software program to generate their resume as yourself. There are only so many different resume creation programs and most are fairly similar. Your resume will really not stand out – to get you to the head of the line for the interview.
It can be a very good investment to take your resume workup generated by the resume software product to an actual professional to either add the finishing touches or to rewrite for your specific target. Two factors come into play here. The new employer will spot the attention to detail, as compared to other generic resumes. Either of two very positive factors can come into play here. It usually happens that either the interview selector and the interviewer think that you are a genius who pays attention to detail or that you are a person who takes the interview process and the new job most seriously by taking the time and trouble to having the resume prepared professionally..
Either way the whole purpose of the exercise of preparing a resume is to get you into the door for the job employment interview.

How to Stand Out in a Crowd of Job Applicants

The other night I saw a TV program discussing how the number of applications for holiday retail jobs is surging. But with most companies either drastically reducing seasonal help or eliminating it altogether, it’s a lot tougher to find that extra cash we all need so badly. One woman who was interviewed said she had applied to every single place she could think of and still hadn’t found work. She looked to be in her mid-40’s, not unattractive, wearing something akin to a polo shirt and casual pants with comfortable loafer-type shoes. Overall, her appearance was neat and clean. So what was she doing wrong? The instant I saw her I knew.

“Green” Jobs Offer a Promising Outlook in New York State

Whether you are trying to give career advice to upcoming graduates deciding on a career direction or advising a professional who is recently unemployed, Green jobs or sustainable energy careers are a promising path to take. New York State is participating in a National Governor’s Association Policy Academy on State Sector Strategies to collaborate with state leaders in an attempt to advance sector strategies and workforce development. Green jobs and renewable resources were listed as one of the three priority sectors which will be addressed-the other two being healthcare and advanced manufacturing. Their goal is to create employment opportunities for low-wage and high-wage sectors in these areas. To achieve these goals, the NYS Department of Labor, in collaboration with the New York State Education Department, State University of New York and City University of New York, is immediately undertaking an inventory of existing workforce training programs and implementing recommendations to achieve the State’s clean energy goals. The priority clean energy sectors to be focused on are Solar Energy, which consists of Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal; Wind Energy for both on-shore and off-shore applications; and Renewable Fuels, which includes both bio fuels and improved energy efficiency (weatherization). In addition to the major job boards, some web sites that are becoming popular in searching for “green” careers are idealist.org, justmeans.com, stopdodo.com, greencareers.com (an offshoot of Monster.com), greendreamjobs.com and greenbiz.com.The main thing to do when pursuing a “green job” is to first determine what area of this broad category would be of most interest to you — such as Ecotourism, green building architecture, waste management, sustainable energy, or green sustainable agriculture. Then focus in on the companies in your geographic area that are in a growth mode. By networking with different “green” industries, you will eventually find one that matches your talents. You will then be able to start a career in an industry you can feel great about. Hopefully, with continuing support from New York State, your career will be able to grow apace with the phenomenal growth projected for this vital, new business sector.
